Bio
Coach Byron Smoot is starting his 3rd season with the Madison Central Football Program, and starting his
17th year coaching at the high school level. Coach Smoot’s desire to become a coach came after time
spent with Coach Herman Boone, the real “Remember the Titans” Coach of Alexandria, Virginia in 2006.
It was then that Coach Smoot, combined his knowledge and dedication for football to become the
Running Backs and Receivers Coach for Estill County High School. During his time at Estill County he saw
an 0-10 Engineer’s team obtain Regional and District Runner Up titles.
The start of the 2009 season, saw Coach Smoot join the Paul Laurence Dunbar football coaching staff in
Lexington Ky. as Assistant Defensive Coordinator and Running Backs Coach. In 2010, he became
Assistant Head Coach, Running Backs and Linebacker Coach. During the 2010 season Coach Smoot was
selected as an assistant coach for the Kentucky All-Stars team in the Border Bowl verses the Tennessee
All-Stars.
In 2011 Coach Smoot accepted an opportunity to join a new incoming staff at Madison Southern High
School in Berea Ky. Over the next 10 years Coach Smoot helped rebuild Madison Southern football and
establish them as a formidable opponent in Class 5 A. During his tenure with the eagles Coach Smoot
was part of multiple district, regional and semi state titles. He was part of the staff that took the eagles
to a state championship game against perennial powerhouse Covington Catholic. Coach Smoot also had
the pleasure of coaching All District, All State and All-American players while at Madison Southern.
Coach Smoot is an active member and volunteer of the Madison County community. He resides in
Richmond and has three daughters Savannah, Sydney, and Hallee.
